If the work half of the equation is the part you cannot compromise on, Lisbon is the strongest surf-and-work base in Portugal by a wide margin. Real coworking spaces with meeting rooms and reliable fibre, a large and established remote-work community, direct flights to most of Europe, and the D8 visa infrastructure that makes longer stays administratively possible. The surf is genuinely good rather than exceptional, and you pay for the setup with a commute that Ericeira and Peniche do not have.

Where to base
Two workable setups. Base in Lisbon - typically Cais do Sodre, Santos, Alcantara or Marvila - and use a proper coworking space, commuting to Caparica or Carcavelos for dawn and evening sessions. Or base in Caparica in a coliving or surf-cowork house and go into the city for anything that needs a meeting room.
The deciding question is how often you need to be somewhere specific at a specific time. If your calendar is full of scheduled calls with video, base in the city; the commute will cost you a session or two a week but the infrastructure is worth it. If your work is asynchronous, base in Caparica and go in occasionally.
The commute is the real variable
From central Lisbon to Caparica is 20 minutes on a clear road and 40-plus in traffic across the 25 de Abril bridge, which is a genuinely congested crossing at peak times. Carcavelos is often the more practical answer on a weekday: the train from Cais do Sodre takes about 25 minutes and does not sit in bridge traffic.
That is the honest trade against Ericeira. Ericeira is five minutes from the water and has a fraction of the infrastructure. Lisbon has everything and charges you 40 to 80 minutes of round trip for each session.
Connectivity and practicalities
Fibre is standard across Lisbon and in most of Caparica. Coworking spaces run business connections and have phone booths, which is the thing surf houses usually lack. Portuguese mobile data is cheap and coverage along the coast is reliable, so an eSIM makes a solid backup.
Realistically you will get three to five sessions a week. Summer gives you a dawn window and a long evening; the north wind that blows most summer afternoons makes the middle of the day a poor use of time anyway, which fits a working schedule better than it sounds.
Common questions
- Lisbon or Ericeira for a surf-and-work month?
- Lisbon if you need meeting rooms, events and a community, and can absorb the commute. Ericeira if your work is asynchronous and water time is the priority. Both work; they optimise for different halves of the trip.
- Do I need a car?
- Not if you base in Lisbon and use Carcavelos, which is on the train line. For Caparica, a car or a camp shuttle makes a real difference - public transport works but adds time at each end.
- Is the surf good enough to justify basing here?
- Caparica is consistent and pleasant rather than world class, and summer afternoons are often blown out by the north wind. If the surf is the primary reason for the trip, Peniche or Ericeira are better. If work is, Lisbon is the correct answer.
