Surf camps & trips in Ericeira

Europe’s only World Surf Reserve, walkable town, the densest camp scene on the coast

Ericeira sits 50 minutes north of Lisbon and packs roughly seven named breaks into a single, walkable surf town. It is one of only a handful of World Surf Reserves on the planet, with a mix of reefs and beach breaks that work across a wide range of swell directions. For visitors who want community, easy logistics, and quality waves close together, it’s usually the strongest single answer in Portugal.

  • World Surf Reserve since 2011
  • 7+ named breaks within 20 minutes
  • Best balance of beginner and advanced terrain in Portugal
  • 50 minutes from Lisbon airport
  • Walkable town, no car strictly required

The waves and the coast

Ericeira’s reef breaks (Coxos, Crazy Left, Backdoor, Reef, Ribeira d’Ilhas, Pedra Branca) face roughly W to NW and pick up the dominant North Atlantic swell direction. Most are tide-sensitive and reward local knowledge, which is exactly what good camp guides provide.

Beginner and intermediate energy gets channelled to the beach breaks: Foz do Lizandro to the south, São Lourenço to the north, and the sand banks around Praia do Sul / Praia dos Pescadores in town. The trip works because the difficulty ladder is so close together: a single van transfer covers everything from learner whitewater to a punchy reef.

Season by season

Spring (April to June) is the sweet spot for most travellers: warming water (around 16 to 18 °C), long days, consistent swell, and pre-summer crowds. Autumn (September to early November) is the local favourite: the most consistent surf of the year, water still warm from summer, and the town slowly emptying out. Both windows are when we book most of our intermediate weeks.

Summer (July to August) is warm and social but smaller and crowded. Great for first-timers and families if you accept gentle, sometimes inconsistent surf in exchange for warm air, late sunsets, and lively evenings. Winter (December to March) is powerful and serious, mostly suited to confident intermediates and above, with rewarding days when the wind aligns.

Who Ericeira suits

Solo travellers, couples, and groups who want a real surf town rather than a remote retreat. Beginners do well in shoulder seasons with a camp that knows which beach to use on a given tide. Intermediates progress quickly because they can session multiple breaks in a single week. Advanced surfers come for the reefs and the option to chase swell within an hour up or down the coast.

What a week here usually looks like

Most camps run two surf sessions a day: an early dawn check followed by a guided session, then a longer afternoon block after the wind drops. In between, the town offers seafood restaurants, a steady café scene, and short walks to clifftop viewpoints. Evenings are low-key, with Casa Cuesta, Mar das Latas and the bars on Rua Prudêncio Franco da Trindade pulling the crowd.

Getting there and around

From Lisbon airport: roughly 50 minutes by private transfer or Uber, around 1h15 by bus. Many camps offer pickup. Within Ericeira, you can walk to most spots in town, but a camp van or shared transfer is what unlocks the surrounding reefs without renting a car. If you want maximum flexibility (and to mix in nearby coasts like Peniche or Caparica), a small rental is worth it.

Common questions about trips in Ericeira

When is the best time of year to surf in Ericeira?
For balance of conditions, crowds, and water temperature, April to early June and September to early November are the strongest windows. October is the local favourite. Summer is the safest call for total beginners; winter rewards confident intermediates with the most powerful swell.
Is Ericeira good for beginners?
Yes, with the right camp. Stick to the beach breaks (Foz do Lizandro, São Lourenço, in-town sandbars) and avoid peak winter. We match beginners to camps that run lessons on appropriate beaches, not on the reefs you see in the photos.
Do I need to rent a car?
Not for a single camp stay. Most camps include transfers to the breaks. A car only makes sense if you want to surf outside Ericeira too (Peniche, Caparica) or you prefer total independence.
How much does a week in Ericeira cost?
Budget roughly €600 to €1,300+ per person for a week (lessons, accommodation, some meals), depending on room type and season. Peak summer and the highest-end retreats push the upper end; spring and autumn shared rooms sit in the middle.
