Surf camps & trips in Peniche

Portugal’s most consistent peninsula, with a corner that works in almost any swell

Peniche juts out so far into the Atlantic that it catches swell from almost every direction. The result: when the rest of the coast is flat or wind-blown, Peniche usually has a working option somewhere. That consistency, paired with the long sandy bays of Baleal, makes it one of the best regions in Portugal for progress-focused weeks, from first-timers to improvers.

  • Most consistent surf on the Portuguese mainland
  • Sand-bottom learner bays at Baleal
  • Host of the WSL Championship Tour event (Supertubos)
  • Honest 90 minutes from Lisbon airport
  • Camp scene built around teaching weeks

The waves and the coast

Peniche works in three personalities. The east side of Baleal (Lagide, Cantinho da Baía) hides from north and west winds and offers long, gentle walls that are perfect for first turns. The west side (Praia do Baleal, Praia da Almagreira) is more exposed and packs more punch when the swell is up. The Peniche peninsula itself hosts Supertubos, a heavy beach break and one of Europe’s most respected barrelling waves, and Molhe Leste / Consolação for solid options when Supertubos is too much.

Because of the geography, there’s almost always a sheltered corner. Camps live and die on whether their guides know how to pick which beach matches the day. That’s exactly what a good operator gets right.

Season by season

Late spring and early autumn (April to June, September to October) are the safest bets for consistent surf with manageable crowds. The shoulder months work well for intermediates moving from whitewater to unbroken waves, because the swell is varied enough to give multiple wave personalities in a single week.

Summer is warm and reliable but busier, especially at the Baleal bays. Winter brings the heaviest swell of the year and is when Supertubos lights up; great as a spectator window, only relevant as a surfing window for confident, fit intermediates and advanced surfers.

Who Peniche suits

Anyone who wants the highest probability of surf every day. Beginners who want to learn in actual rideable lines (not just whitewater bumps) do exceptionally well in Baleal’s sheltered bays. Improvers love the variety: you can move from a soft sand peak to a steeper wall in 15 minutes by van. Advanced surfers chase Supertubos and Consolação in winter.

What a week here usually looks like

Peniche camps tend to be more lesson-structured than Ericeira’s scene: longer in-water blocks, video sessions, theory on tides and reading sets. Days run on tide windows; afternoons are usually free for board work, naps, or a short walk into Peniche town for seafood. The vibe is friendlier and quieter than Ericeira, more like a surf summer camp than a town.

Getting there and around

From Lisbon airport: about 90 minutes by private transfer, 2 hours by bus to Peniche then a short taxi to Baleal. Most camps include pickup. You don’t need a car: Peniche and Baleal share a short coastline that vans cover all day. A rental only matters if you want to combine Peniche with Nazaré (45 min north) or Ericeira (40 min south) in the same trip.

Common questions about trips in Peniche

Is Peniche good for absolute beginners?
Yes, it is probably the best mainland region for the first lesson-heavy weeks. The east-side bays of Baleal stay sheltered when the open coast is too big, so beginners get rideable conditions on more days than in most other regions.
When does Supertubos work?
Supertubos needs a serious north-west swell and offshore winds, mostly between October and March. It’s a heavy, fast beach break with a strong shorebreak, suitable only for confident surfers. Visiting in those months you’ll likely see it, but you may not personally surf it.
Peniche or Ericeira: which should I pick?
Peniche if you want maximum consistency and a quieter, more lesson-focused week. Ericeira if you want a livelier town, more wave variety in one walkable area, and a stronger evening scene. Both work for almost any level; we’ll match based on dates and the kind of week you want.
What does a week in Peniche cost?
Typical surf camp weeks run €500 to €1,100 per person depending on room type and season. Peniche skews slightly cheaper than Ericeira for equivalent accommodation, and shared dorms in shoulder season are the best value on the coast.
