Family surf holidays in Portugal

Patient instructors, mellow beaches, the right mix for kids and parents

A surf holiday with kids works in Portugal because the country has been doing it for years. There are dedicated children’s surf programmes, family-sized apartments built into camp setups, mellow beaches that forgive any age, and a culture that genuinely welcomes children in restaurants, hotels, and surf schools. The trick is picking the right region, the right camp, and the right week.

  • Dedicated kids’ surf programmes (ages 5 to 16)
  • Family-sized apartments inside camp setups
  • Best regions: central Algarve, Caparica, parts of Peniche
  • Mellow sand-bottom beaches with lifeguards in season
  • Best windows: late June to early September for school holidays

Where to go with kids

The central Algarve is the easiest family-surf region in Portugal. Warm water, gentle sand-bottom waves, the strongest holiday infrastructure (apartments, pools, restaurants that welcome kids), and an airport (Faro) within an hour of most surf bases. This is the natural choice for first-time surf families and for families with young kids (5 to 10).

Peniche and Baleal also work very well for older kids and teens (10+), with dedicated surf programmes, more wave variety, and a camp structure that suits families wanting more focus on surf than holiday-around-surf. Caparica (south of Lisbon) is the right call if you want to mix surf with one of Europe’s best city-break destinations.

What kids’ surf actually looks like

Most family-friendly camps run dedicated kids’ groups, with their own age-appropriate boards, instructors who speak the camp’s common languages (English, often German and French too), and shorter session lengths (60 to 90 minutes) tuned to attention spans. Many camps offer teens’ groups that run almost identical to adult progression streams. Some include surf theory, beach games, and ocean-safety lessons.

Look for camps with named kids’ programme leads, a ratio of one instructor to four kids or better, soft-top kids’ boards in multiple sizes, and lifeguard coverage on the lesson beach. Avoid camps that try to fit kids into adult groups; the experience for both is worse.

When to come with kids

School holidays are the obvious window: late June to early September (northern hemisphere summer), plus shorter windows around Easter and October half-term. Summer is the warmest, easiest call: warm water, long days, busiest social atmosphere. Easter and October are quieter, with slightly cooler water but more authentic Portuguese energy in the towns. Winter family weeks are possible in the south but a tougher sell for the kids.

Accommodation choices for families

For families with kids, a private apartment or family room is almost always the right answer. Most family-friendly camps include 2- or 3-bedroom apartments within or attached to the camp setup, with shared use of the camp’s pool, kitchen, and communal spaces. Some have dedicated family villas. Dorms work for older teens but rarely for families with younger kids.

Common questions

What’s the youngest age for surf lessons?
Most operators teach from age 5 to 6 in dedicated kids’ groups, sometimes from 4 in private one-on-one settings. Below that, the camp is usually a beach holiday with parents and surf for older family members.
Will my kids enjoy it if they’ve never tried?
Almost always yes, especially in the right region. The progression is rapid (most kids stand up by day two or three), the social element is strong, and the daily structure suits children well. Choose the central Algarve for the lowest-friction first experience.
Can parents and kids learn together?
Yes. Most family camps run parallel adult and kids’ groups so everyone surfs at the same time, then comes back together for lunch. Some offer family lessons as a single group for older kids and parents.
What about non-surfing kids or partners?
Most family-friendly camps include beach time, pool access, and other activities so non-surfing family members are fully occupied. We can specifically prioritise camps with strong non-surf offerings.
What does a family week cost?
Family weeks vary widely depending on apartment size and the level of meals included. A typical family of four lands €2,200 to €4,500 for a week including accommodation, all surf lessons, and most meals. Self-catering options come in lower.
