Baleal in summer is the closest thing Portugal has to a surf town organised around groups. The village is small, the bars are on the beach, and a large share of the accommodation is whole-house rather than per-bed - which is the detail that matters, because the usual problem with booking six or eight friends into a surf camp is ending up split across three dorms in two buildings. Peniche has enough whole-property inventory that you can avoid that, if you book early enough.

The mixed-ability problem
Almost every group has a spread: one person who surfs, three who have had a lesson, and two who have never stood up. Peniche handles this better than most places because the schools are large enough to run beginner and intermediate groups simultaneously on the same stretch of beach. You are split for the two-hour session and back together for the rest of the day, which is the outcome you want.
Ask this specifically before booking. A small camp with one instructor will either teach to the weakest person in your group or leave the strongest surfer in a whitewater lesson for a week, and both ruin the trip. The question to ask is how many instructors are running on a typical day in your dates, not whether they can accommodate mixed levels - everyone says yes to that.
House or camp
Two models. A whole surf house gives you a kitchen, privacy, and control over the evening, usually with lessons bolted on from a local school - it works out at roughly 400 to 700 euros per person for a week including coaching if you fill the beds. A camp puts you in the general house with other guests, costs less, and comes with organised evenings and a lot of other travellers. Groups over about eight almost always want the house; groups of three or four usually have more fun in the camp.
July and August whole-house inventory in Baleal goes four to six months out. If your dates are fixed and your group is large, that is the real constraint, not budget.

- Yes, and Peniche is one of the better places for it because schools run parallel groups. Confirm the instructor count for your specific dates rather than accepting a general yes.
- Do camps take stag and hen groups?
- Many do not, and the ones that do usually have rules. Be upfront about what kind of group you are when you send the brief - it saves a rejection two weeks before the trip. We only put forward camps that are comfortable with the group type.
- How busy is Baleal in summer?
- Very. July and August it is at capacity, in the water and in the village. If your group wants the social scene that is exactly what you want. If you want waves with space around them, come in June or September and accept quieter evenings.
